Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) Course is a one year Pre sea Training course for Graduates those who have completed BE /B Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture. GME is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of competency, awarded by the ministry of shipping Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Navy Vessels (Ships) anywhere in the world. GME Course is the gateway for Mechanical & Naval Architecture Graduates to enter into Merchant Navy.

    Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) Course Eligibility.

    A Candidate should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical & Automation Engineering after attending a course of 4 years duration from an UGC recognized University and or approved by AICTE, with a minimum marks of 50% in the final year; and a minimum 50% marks in English language at the 10th or 12th standard or in Degree Examination.

    The Maximum age limit for an admission to the One Year GME course is 28 years.

    Initially as a GME Engine cadet receives a stipend of 500$ for six months, Once cadet  clears the   Class IV certificate of competency cadet gets promoted to Fourth Engineer and receives a salary of 3000$ and further clearing the certificate of competencies after required sea time cadet gets promoted upto Chief Engineer(salary-$10000).

    Work of seafarers on ships can be categorized into 3 basic departments:

    1.Deck Officers –The officers from this branch primarily look after the ships navigation, loading/unloading of cargo and the general maintenance and administration of the ship.     2.Engineering Officers –These are the officer who is qualified in Marine Engineering. They join as 4th Engineer and step by step, get promoted to 3rd, 2nd and Chief Engineer, subject to their passing the competency exams and performance on board the ship. The Engineering department in addition to looking after the main engines, are also responsible for associated equipment like power generation equipment, cargo pumps and air – conditioning etc.
